Post 1

In today’s society, rap and R&B are the one of the most popular forms of music. However, the themes and lyrics of many songs that fall into these genres tend to be vulgar, offensive, violent, and sexist.  Sexism in rap music is the main topic of this blog and is apparent through the negative portrayal of women found in both the lyrics and music videos of such songs. This is an important issue because since rap music is so popularized today, these negative representations of women, especially African American women, are being popularized to a huge majority of people, potentially giving them the idea that it is acceptable to treat women in such demeaning ways. By comparing multiple studies and articles in academic journals that address this topic, I will try to answer question of in what ways do the sexualized images of women in rap and R&B music videos and lyrics affect public perceptions of young women.

This picture is of a rap group and a girl who is the main star of their music video. She wearing skimpy clothing and portrayed in a provocative and promiscuous way. This is just one example of how women are commonly portrayed in popular rap music today.
